Own this

Nicola makes me a drawing šŸ™‚

This past weekend was one of my best ever pottery events šŸ™‚ My plan for trading an ornament with kids for some version of their own creativity went better than I could have imagined. I was told a joke, a few stories, was sang to, and was made several dozen drawings that nearly broke my heart to receive…. It was a special time, and I am so thankful for the folks who made it out.

Because…. you own this. Whatever I am as an artist you are a part of it. I could not be doing the things I do if there was no one I was doing it for. I hope to make the world a better place in this humble and beautiful sort of way, but you are the world I am doing this for. And you help me do it. Your kindness in sharing what I do with family and friends helps show others the secret magic of what we already know. Most importantly you bring that magic to your own lives, drinking your morning coffee in a favorite mug, eating your meals on a favorite plate, and the many other ways that these creations add to the joys of your life. You own this.

So thank you all for the precious support for what I am doing and for your participation in my calling šŸ™‚ We are partners in this adventure, and I am truly grateful to have you by my side. Whatever I am able to bring to the world I do in the spirit of friendship and generosity that you share with me. Your hands and smiles are with me as I labor to give life to the dreams of my imagination. That only becomes meaningful when we share in its secret virtue.

So this is our community. We each belong. And the beauty we find is real, because we make it real. That small difference in the world is what keeps me going, and your part is indispensable. That gives me both comfort and joy. And I hope you take at least a tiny bit of pride in that, your own joy in making this difference. You truly own it šŸ™‚

Peace and love šŸ™‚

About Carter Gillies

I am an active potter and sometime pottery instructor who is fascinated by the philosophical side of making pots, teaching these skills, and issues of the artistic life in general. I seem to have a lot to say on this blog, but I don't insist that I'm right. I'm always trying to figure stuff out, and part of that involves admitting that I am almost always wrong in important ways. If you are up for it, please help me out by steering my thoughts in new and interesting directions. I always appreciate the challenge of learning what other people think.
